March Mountaineering & Avalanche Training

On Saturday March 23, KISAR members ascended Pyramid Mountain where they trained in a number of general mountaineering and avalanche assessment skills including:
  • Crampon safety and use, including ascending and descending footwork
  • Ice ax safety and use including hand grips and 4 body-position self-arrest scenarios (head- and feet-first, both on stomach and back)
  • Snow stability assessment for avalanche safety by digging a test pit and performing an extended column test (ECT)
  • Erecting shelters for camping on snow
